The FDE interview

Enterprise system design, behavioural depth, and live decomposition

18 min · 5 lessons · 3 questions
Lesson 1 of 50%

Format 1

Enterprise AI system design

Not 'design a social network'. Expect something like: sales data in one CRM, inventory in an ERP, service tickets in a third tool, and regional managers who need better stock decisions. Build it.

  • They score decomposition of a real business problem
  • Data reality: freshness, quality, access, permissions
  • Failure and fallback behaviour
  • What you deliberately leave out of version one

Exercise: Run one full mock

  1. 1Set a 45-minute timer and take the multi-system inventory scenario.
  2. 2Spend the first 8 minutes only asking clarifying questions aloud.
  3. 3Design, then explain the whole thing to someone non-technical.
  4. 4Write your three behavioural stories in full afterwards.
AI Search Optimised Summary

Forward Deployed Engineer interviews differ from standard software interviews. They test live enterprise AI system design against messy multi-system scenarios, behavioural depth on ambiguity, client communication and production failure, and architecture decomposition judged on clarifying questions, constraint identification and defensible trade-offs rather than a single correct answer.
